Cupcake benefit yields sweet returns for Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE–Cupcake-palooza, a tasting party featuring more than 3,000 donated cupcakes by area vendors and home bakers, brought in almost $4,000 for Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee.

Now in its third and biggest installment yet, Cupcake-palooza drew more than 250 people to Belmont United Methodist Church’s community center to sample cupcakes and support child literacy on March 24, despite rainy weather and threats of hail. The event was sponsored by Abode Real Estate.

Mayor Karl Dean attended the event, speaking to the audience about the importance of books and reading before announcing the winning amateur and semi-professional bakers: first place to Markisha Dryden for her strawberry cupcake; second place to Angela Roberts for her coconut cupcake, and third place to Katie Bond and Lisa Young for their carrot spice cupcake with coconut buttercream icing.

“We were thrilled with the turnout, and with the Mayor addressing the crowd on how great the Imagination Library is, and encouraging everyone to keep reading,” said Director of Books from Birth Sheryl Rogers. “More than 68,000 local children have received Imagination Library books, and events like this help ensure we have the funding to continue.”

New this year, Smart Sprouts sponsored a children’s craft zone, and Game Stop provided a Wii gaming area for kids to jump, dance and play. Noodles & Co., a Green Hills pasta restaurant, donated biodegradable to-go containers.

“We wanted people to be able to enjoy cupcakes at home, so we added a to-go option this year,” said event organizer Joan Brasher. “It was a huge hit and we will do it again next year.”

Local author Shellie Braeuner performed readings of her hit children’s book “The Great Dog Wash,” and offered dog-themed cupcakes.

Organizers ended the event by distributing six boxes of cupcakes to Ronald McDonald House and Nashville Rescue Mission.

Bakeries who donated included The Cupcake Collection, The Painted Cupcake, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Mattie-Cakes, The Sweet Stash, Grins Vegetarian Café, Costco, Harris Teeter and Vanderbilt Dining, among others. Additional treats were provided by Tasti D-Lite and Blue Bell Ice Cream, and QDoba Mexican Grill provided free samples of Mexican gumbo.

Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee’s mission is to increase literacy and school readiness while strengthening family relationships. Books from Birth gives local preschoolers books at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and also in the mail monthly from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The costs are split among the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation, the Children’s Hospital, and money raised locally. a post about missing teeth.

the boy has lost his fourth tooth. he's starting to look like a jack-o-lantern. a very cute jack-o-lantern, that is.

by the way, his tooth loss has nothing to do with the consumption of too many sugary treats over the weekend.

he's decided he no longer enjoys cupcakes and didn't have even one at cupcake-palooza. already he knows how to break his mother's heart.

cupcake-palooza post mortem.

well, cupcake-palooza is officially over, and we're all feeling pretty pleased (and exhausted). we raised nearly $4,000 for books from birth of middle tennessee! to see all the photos, visit our facebook page.

all i can say is this would never have happened without the support of my dear friends sheryl and kelly (pictured), plus the books from birth team (including cathy, heather, beth, sarah and louise), the volunteers from hands on nashville and the volunteer leaders (like kelly r., chris f, lauren, and many more).

it was truly a team effort. nearly 3,000 cupcakes were donated, the mayor came, and the people showed up despite the rain.

i have a lot of thank you notes to write!

peace and love,
joan

a short commercial break.

photo courtesy of (which means i took without permission, but hopefully whitney won't mind) The Sweet Stash

and now, we take a brief moment to concentrate on something other than cupcake-palooza, which is turning out to to be the hugest thing ever (huzzah!).

this is a tantalizing stack of peanut butter cookies fused together with real peanut butter butter cream icing.

i'm obsessed.

i so wish i could dash over to the sweet stash at nashville farmer's market and get my fill of these today between noon and one.

however, i'm double and triple booked. i'll have to clone myself just to complete all the tasks and appointments on my calendar as it is.

so instead i'll dream.

if you get over there, buy me one. i'll pay you back.

peace, love, and peanut butter.

j
ps the sweet stash will be at cupcake-palooza. can't wait to meet whitney and crew in person!

oops. Got busy and didn't post.

image blatantly ripped from griottes.fr, by way of sparkles and pretending.

in the meantime, just hum softly to yourself. i'll be back tomorrow.

suffice to say i'm in full-on cupcake-palooza mode as well as my regular work, so we're grinding the gears, baby. and it's all good.

peace,
j

i'm super excited about cupcake-palooza this year - it's coming up march 24 - less than a month away!

this year is special because ...

... abode real estate is a generous sponsor!

... we have a game stop wii/nintendo gaming area where we can jump, dance and burn off calories!

... my favorite noodle shop, noodles and co., is providing a fun prize wheel and giveaways!

... starbucks is providing free coffee!

... mayor karl dean is coming!

... tasti d-lite's mascot mr. swirly will be handing out frozen tasty treats!

... and qdoba will be handing out samples of their mexican gumbo!

... oh, and did i mention thousands of cupcakes, from such vendors as nothing bundt cakes, cupcake collection, the sweet stash and more?

it's been a lot of work, but it looks like we'll bring in lots of money for books from birth this year!

we went back to noodles & co. and it continues to please.

noodles any way you like them: for me it's the butter noodles with shaved Parmesan, salt and pepper (and of course butter).

so kid-friendly, especially for my picky little monster.

PS they're donating biodegradable take-out containers for cupcake-palooza, and also will be in attendance with freebies and a prize wheel. hurray for noodles & co.!

make your mammogram sweet.

i discovered something wonderful last week while killing time before my mammogram.

i went down the concourse to get a bagel at einstein brothers and suddenly noticed that the einstein brothers was in fact an au bon pain! imagine my surprise!

i was immediately smitten with this: a creme brulee cupcake.

i snatched it up and as i dashed back toward the waiting area, shoved the entire thing into my mouth.

heaven, my lovelies. heaven. sweet, light, crunchy. mmmm....

next time i shall have two.

PS i am obsessed with getting these donated to my upcoming cupcake fundraiser for child literacy. au bon pain, if you're listening, please say yes!

cupcake-palooza is coming soon.

cupcake-palooza 3: a benefit for books from birth of middle tennessee, is set for march 24, 2012, at belmont united methodist church in hillsboro village. this is an event i coordinate each year, and it's a lot of fun.

last year we had cupcakes from gigi's, painted cupcake, cupcake collection, matty-cakes and so many more. at this event, our guests get to sample mini cupcakes from their favorite cupcakeries while supporting a good cause.

this year promises to be even bigger and better!

please save the date! we have some fantastic sponsors on board, including abode real estate, qdoba mexican grill and game stop/nintendo.

i am passionate about books, and i love supporting this cause that helps pre-schoolers get on the path to loving books and reading! see you march 24!

oh, and please come to our facebook page and "like" us! spread the word!
