A Flash of Inspiration

I love this illustration on Cupcake Swirl, where I recently purchased some chocolate brown baking cups. Please, will someone out there tell me how this is created? Is it flash? Is it hand drawn and then scanned in? I simply must know. My dream is to be able to create adorable illustrations like this and I just love this style. Comments, please!

Hi Joan! I'm a friend of Jean's from So Cal who's been following your blog recently, along with hers. (Is it possible to read one without the other? I'm married to a twin, so I think not!) I felt compelled to chime in on your question about the art for Cupcake Swirl. It was most likely created with a vector-based drawing program like Adobe Illustrator. The image is not animated (a characteristic of Flash), but is instead one 1000-pixel square static GIF file that is tiled across the page. (You can see the edges where the image repeats on a large monitor.) Some of it was probably hand-drawn (e.g., the people) and other parts imported from other sources (e.g., the clouds). I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip to Calif.!

I don't know how its done but if you like whimsical illustrations you might get a kick out of children's illustrator Holli Conger. We use her a little bit for the magazine.
www.holliconger.com and hollicongerdesigns.com/portfli - she even has a cupcake collection :-)
