Curious and fabulous!

I hear a fabulous new cupcake shop has opened in historic downtown Franklin, Tennessee. It's called the Curious Gourmet Cupcake Cafe. I can't wait to check it out. It's a part of a larger retail store which carries high-end appliances, cookware and the like. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone in Franklin would jump on the cupcake bandwagon. I really would like to see a local independent baker like Shara Lunn or Jessica at Cuppycakes get a shot at having their own place. Hopefully as the cupcake craze continues, we'll see more of that. If you've been to the Curious Gourmet, leave me a comment.

Curious and Fabulous is right! We went to Franklin on Labor day to look around, and to our surprise everything was closed! Curious Gourmet Cupcake Cafe was open though so we decided to check it out. The inside is decorated really cute with a "gourmet" feel. The Cupcake display was beyond beautiful and they all looked too good to eat. We each got a different kind and shared; Peanut Butter Cup, the caramel one, a Hi Hat, and Strawberry Shortcake. After eating them I wasn't surprised to find out they are actually Pastry Chefs in the kitchen. They were all absolutley fabulous, and we will definitely go back soon.

So yesterday I was walking down main street and noticed this giant bright pink sign with a cupcake that read Ivey Cakes. Being a little confused since Curious Gourmet just opened, I wanted to check the place out because I thought that was pretty fast for another cupcakery to go up around the same neighborhood. It's right next to Franklin Mercantile Deli, and small as can be. I walked in and they were pretty busy so I decided to try one. Their cupcakes are $3 each. I chose to try their caramel one, can't remember the name for it. Can you tell I love caramel?!? I was shocked! When I got it home and took it out of the pretty pink box it was a disappointment. It's the same size as a standard cupcake I bake at home. The liner was one of those really tacky foil ones and unfortunately that wasn't the worst part. When I peeled the wrapper off, my fingers were covered in grease. The cake is definitely homemade, so kudos to them for that, but it was so dry, despite the grease. I also think it needed a filling. I thought I was doing good by only paying $3, but from now on I will fork over the extra $.25 cents for the bigger and much tastier cupcake down the street at Curious Gourmet, no problem. Competition is always a good thing though and I do wish Ivey Cakes the best of luck.
